Hi Hunter Macaulay Class of 2030!
My name is Muhammad Uneeb Zafar, and I am a freshman at Hunter pursuing the premedical track. I grew up in Lahore, Pakistan, and recently moved to New York, where I completed high school. Starting again in a new country taught me how valuable it is to have people who welcome you, answer your questions, and help you find your place.
Outside academics, I enjoy soccer, badminton, pickleball, public speaking, photography, and exploring New York. I am running because I want Macaulay to feel like a genuine community where every student feels connected, involved, and represented.
WHY I AM PREPARED
Before moving to New York, I was elected as the Head Boy (Student Government President) at my school. I led the student council, represented student concerns before faculty and administrators, and helped create new opportunities in response to what students wanted.
I also founded and led a cycling club focused on sustainable transportation and Lahore’s smog problem. Its success inspired us to establish an Environmental Club so more students could become involved. As the formally recognized team leader, I led a group of six students in developing Resolving the Plight of Smog, which won the 2023 National Geographic Slingshot Challenge and the People’s Choice Award, receiving $10,000 in prize funding.
My leadership also extended to events and athletics. As Director of Dareecha 7.0, I coordinated teams and managed an event involving nearly 1,000 participants from multiple schools. As Vice President of the Sports Club, I helped organize competitions while competing in soccer at the intra regional level.
After moving to New York, I served as EMT Spokesperson on the James Madison Medical House Board and as Chapter Development Director for the student nonprofit Salam Support. I also represented James Madison as a singles player on the varsity badminton team and completed EMT coursework and ambulance clinical rotations. These experiences taught me that leadership requires more than presenting ideas. It requires listening carefully, remaining calm, and following through.
WHAT I WOULD WORK ON
Clear communication: I would create a simple way for Hunter Macaulay students to submit concerns and ideas. After Scholars Council meetings, I would share brief updates explaining what was discussed, what action was taken, and what still needs further attention.
A more connected community: Drawing from my experience with Dareecha, I would work toward a Hunter Macaulay showcase where students could share their interests, projects, cultures, and organizations. I would also communicate with existing Macaulay clubs so students can more easily discover academic, service, creative, and professional opportunities across campuses.
Accessible recreation: I would begin by exploring a badminton or multisport event designed for beginners as well as experienced players. If students respond positively, we could work with the appropriate Macaulay committees to develop additional recreational and intercampus activities.
I do not expect to enter this position already knowing every concern our class has. My first responsibility would be to listen. What I can offer is previous elected leadership, experience turning student ideas into real initiatives, and a commitment to being honest about what can be accomplished.
It would be an honor to represent Hunter’s Macaulay Class of 2030 and help build a community where students feel informed, involved, active, and heard.
