Hi y’all, I’m Jana!
You may have met me at orientation, but if not, here’s a bit about me. I was born and raised in Astoria, Queens, and I’m Egyptian-American (yes, that’s where the curls come from; peep the “I love MHC” sign). I’m running because I want everyone else to love it as much as I do.
I’m planning to major in Human Biology on the pre-med track, and I want to make sure our class actually feels like a class, not just 1,000+ kids passing each other in giant lecture halls.
Here’s what I’ll actually work on:
Building a real community. A lot of us came into Hunter worried we wouldn’t find our people here, especially as commuter students, and this goes for dorm students too. I want to run semester-by-semester mixers that bring together students across grades and campuses, so no one feels isolated in their own year or building. As a Safety Youth Ambassador with Malikah, I organized weekly workshops and managed outreach for our community, so I know what it takes to actually get people to show up and stay connected, not just plan an event once and call it done.
Fighting for OMNY accessibility. Commuting is expensive, and reliable transit access shouldn’t be a barrier to getting to class. This is personal for me: through my work with Malikah, I’ve organized around safety and accessibility for our community, and I want to bring that same energy to pushing for more accessible fare options for CUNY students.
Supporting students headed to grad school. Whether it’s med school, law school, or something else, a lot of us are already thinking ahead, and I want Macaulay to actually support that pipeline instead of leaving us to figure it out alone. This can be done through holding events where experts or alumni in the field come and speak.
I’m not coming into this without receipts. I’m currently Treasurer for Macaulay Peace Action and Event Coordinator for MENA, because community isn’t just something I talk about, it’s what I will always continue to foster.
Hehe, I’d love your vote, let’s make the next 4 amazing!!!
