Hello, fellow Macaulay students!
My name is Abril, and I am more than delighted to announce that I will be running as your Student Council Representative for Lehman College.
I come from a background of being involved in student council, where I had the opportunity to donate cans of food to local food pantries while also organizing bake sales to help fundraise for local causes. I view the holidays as a special time to give back, and every Christmas, I create letters and drawings to be given to children at St. Jude and to homes for older adults.
My willingness to give back has no barriers. It does not stop because of someone’s age, background, group, or culture. During the summer, I volunteer to support Dominican children who may not have the school supplies they need for the new school year. I help provide pencils, notebooks, backpacks, and other materials so that every child can feel prepared and confident entering a learning environment.
FREE BOOKS / AFFORDABLE TEXTBOOK EXCHANGE
College textbooks can cost $100 or more, creating an unnecessary financial burden for students. I want to work toward creating a platform where students can sell, trade, or donate used textbooks and course materials to one another at affordable prices. No student should have to worry about whether they can afford the materials they need to succeed in class.
CLUB FUNDRAISING
Clubs are an important part of student life, but many struggle with limited funding. I want to advocate for regular fundraising opportunities and designated spaces for clubs to raise money. The money raised would go directly toward supporting each participating club and its activities.
COMMUNITY GIVEAWAYS
Giving back to our community should be something we do together. I want to organize community donation and giveaway events where students can donate clothing, school supplies, food, and other necessities to people who need them. I also want to encourage students to volunteer with local food pantries and community organizations.
#NO STUDENT LEFT BEHIND
As a student who grew up in public schools, I have seen how difficult it can be for students to get the academic support they need. I want to create a #NoStudentLeftBehind movement, connecting Macaulay students with public schools where they can volunteer as literacy tutors, read with younger students, and provide academic support.
But this movement wouldn’t stop at tutoring. Macaulay students could also organize school-supply and clothing drives to help children who may not have the materials they need to feel prepared and confident at school.
But why should you give me your vote?
I believe that one of the most important characteristics a leader should possess is the ability to take a step back—to listen, understand, and consider different perspectives without prejudice.
As your representative, I would make it my mission to listen to each and every one of you, your ideas, and, most importantly, your concerns making sure I represent you correctly and throughly. To me, being a representative does not mean there is a hierarchy where one person believes they know best. Instead, I firmly believe that we are a team—a community where ideas can be shared, different perspectives can be respected, and mistakes can be acknowledged and learned from.
But I am not running alone, I am part of the M line, a group of students from each campus creating a slate. By running as a slate, we are able to decrease the gap between campuses. There’s power in numbers so we promise to create a more unified community and fight for the issues that affect all Cuny students including transportation, communication, finances, and making cuny a more memorable experience.
