Not just Baruch, not just me, but all of us – Class of 2029!
Hello, fellow classmates! My name is Zena Shaalan, and I would be honored to be Baruch’s Class of 2029 representative on the Macaulay Scholars Council. I’m 18, born and raised in Queens, speaking Arabic and Spanish. I love discovering hidden gems in the city and I’m always looking to make friends. At Baruch, I am majoring in Economics on the path to law school, yet beyond academics, I ‘ve always been about building connections. No matter the campus nor major, I want to bring the Class of 2029 together across the board, making our strength in numbers.
Over my four years at Queens Metropolitan High School (QMHS), I was elected for both Student Council and National Honors Society President, ran multiple clubs like Art Club, the Debate Team, and participated in many more including the Muslim Student Association (MSA) and Key Club. I also balanced a work-study position while sitting on my school’s Student Leadership Team (SLT), working weekly with the Principal and administration. However, what was more valuable than titles was my ability to connect people and represent many things at once in the spaces I entered. That’s what I did at QMHS, whether presenting at CCNY in the summer of 2023 or at Queens College in fall 2024, I took pride in my work and now I plan to do the same for Class of 2029. I have never been bound to one space, and I want to carry that same mindset to Macaulay.
Similarly, as your representative, I will be able to proudly and confidently represent Baruch while uniting all eight campuses. My vision is to bring powerful change to our community with more opportunities using New York City itself as a tool for growth, creating a globalization on our connections that will benefit every student. It is time for the Class of 2029 to be the spark that brings CUNY and Macaulay to greater heights.
