Hello fellow Bloodhounds! My name is Mariam Faisal, and I am a freshman at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Why am I running for council? Simple – I want to make your undergraduate experience as enjoyable, fun, and memorable as possible. I will not only discuss your concerns with the rest of my council members, but also your requests and suggestions for our four years together. One of the current concerns I have recognized is the lack of funding for the laptops we were all guaranteed until we committed to Macaulay. Generally, the budget keeps lessening year by year. I want to plan fundraising events that include people from within and outside of CUNY with the help of my fellow council members, so we can easily enjoy our college experience while also maintaining the expectations of the cohorts to come. In only the first week of our first semester in college, I have seen the bond that we Macaulay students have created with each other, whether it be in our Macaulay Seminar or representing John Jay across the eight campuses. As a Council member, I aim to help strengthen that bond through these events and efforts.

Why am I a great candidate for council? I possess the leadership and communication skills needed to drive productivity to improve the quality of John Jay Macaulay. I have a strong presence (as all of you have seen) and am passionate about public speaking and making my voice heard, whether I’m reciting my published poem for a crowd or debating policies that affect the student body. This means that whatever you want to bring to the Council from John Jay will be seen and heard. In high school, I was a mentor for a group of underclassmen, and I also led a portion of my Mock Trial Team to victory. Furthermore, I have experience in Student Cabinet and being class representative for two years each, aiding in creating spirit days and bonding activities for my classes, and relaying important information that affected the whole school.

Overall, I am a social butterfly who loves connecting students and faculty to discuss how we can better our John Jay, Macaulay, and CUNY environment. Along the same line, I have interned at the NYPD, so I have seen both sides of law and justice, which are equally as important to us as John Jay students. As an avid advocate, I have presented at showcases to help raise awareness about the injustices of homelessness and have planned a community event to advocate for Women’s Health to bring about the struggles of receiving medical care as a woman. Moreover, I am a writer and published poet, and have recited my poem about the need to speak up and be heard by authority to peers. This shows that I understand and recognize your position and will be your voice in the Council. Additionally, as a social person, I am able to read people well. Something that I have noticed already is the mass imposter syndrome that everyone is experiencing. Not everyone is vocal about it, but everyone is absolutely feeling it, especially as one of the smaller factions in Macaulay. As part of Council, I will bring up the issues on everyone’s minds in order to find a solution to help everyone in our cohort, and advocate for those who feel awkward in speaking about them.

Thank you for taking the time to read my proposal. I look forward to representing you as the John Jay Macaulay Scholars Councilmember! 🙂
